Satellite Communications: Wideband Global Satcom (WGS)
With Boeing Satellite Systems as the primary contractor, the nine Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellites will serve to enhance the existing Defense Satellite Communications System and Global Broadcast System and offset their eventual decline in performance. WGS will enable execution of tactical command and control, communications, and computers; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR); battle management; and combat support information for Australia and USA’s Departments of Defence.
Canada Signs on to WGS - 17 Jan 2012
The Canadian Government/Canadian Dept of National Defence (DND) has recently and officially signed on to the WGS program to provide assured strategic communications for its forces for the next 20 years. Canada will be making a contribution of approximately $337M Cdn to the program and will be joining other nations such as Australia, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Denmark, New Zealand, and of course the US.
Secure Communications at a Reasonable Price
This development follows a long line of activity and discussions within DND to arrive at this capability. Besides satisfying Canada's strategic needs, it does so by recognizing the importance of interoperability and for providing communications assurance for a large period of time. It will be interesting to see how this capability will be able to match the ever-increasing appetite for applications and wireless data.
